I attend a lot of conferences and expos on online marketing. It’s the ONLY way to keep up in this field! Become a sponge and soak it up. Just this past year, I spent roughly 10k on traveling and attending social media conferences and seminars. Sometimes I take notes and other times I just sit and absorb.
Somehow, two colleagues I know took ALL the material on smart online marketing and made it applicable. If you didn’t attend a single learning event this year, don’t sweat it. Just get their books and you will be caught up as I am. NO kidding! I rarely brag about books to you guys because I read so much that at some point they all bleed together. Not so this time. I would be doing a great DISSERVICE if I didn’t share my thoughts on these two gems!
Get Content, Get Customers! by Joe Pulizzi and Newt Barrett. You know how I am a big fan of VALUABLE content rather than loud marketing? Yea, these guys get it. Not only do they get it, but they show you how to do it. They show how any business (large or small) can use the concept of content marketing to attract qualified clients. This isn’t a book of theory. It’s jam packed with case studies and statistics. Content sells! They show you how. The best marketing education 20 bucks ever bought anyone!
Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day by Dave Evans. I met Dave last year at SXSW in the Blogger’s lounge. He was warm, friendly, and BLEW me away with his thoughts on social media. Unlike a lot of social media practitioners and marketers, Dave doesn’t just talk about community and relationships. He shows you how to build them, and how to do it in an hour a day. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an expert, Dave’s book has some takeaways for everyone.
