At the Zen Media Group, we feel that we’re pretty lucky. We work with bright, energetic colleagues, we have wonderful clients, and we have a global team that grants us a worldwide perspective on our work and our industry.
But there’s another, more basic reason we feel so lucky. We know that we don’t have to worry about censorship or persecution for the words we write or opinions we express, whether that’s a blog post we write for a client or a personal tweet we send out off the clock. Here in the U.S., journalists, bloggers, writers, and anyone who posts on social media can do so largely without fear of being chased down by the government and jailed.
In so many countries around the world, this isn’t the case, and that’s why Blog Action Day 2015 is organized on the theme “Raise Your Voice.”
While there are, unfortunately, countless bloggers, writers, and journalists who have been imprisoned or worse simply for having the courage to speak out against injustice, we’ve decided to focus on the group of people who are calling attention to the European Migrant Crisis through their words, and sometimes, photographs. We salute these individuals and news organizations for sharing this vital story with the world.
HONY creator Brandon Stanton, best known for his sensitive portraits of individuals he meets on the streets of New York, traveled to Europe in September to document the journeys of the migrants who are fleeing Syria and other war-torn Middle Eastern countries. You can find those posts in the archive.
This collective of citizen bloggers from around the world shares important stories that are not reported, or are underreported, by the media. See their posts about the migrant crisis here.
Always excellent, the NYT Lens blog spotlights an Italian photographer, Giulio Piscitelli, who has been photographing migrants making their way to Europe since 2011. You can see plenty of his incredible images in the post.
And of course, Zen Media believes in the power of raising our voices for those in our own communities. That’s why our CEO, Shama Hyder, devotes time to mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs through the Young Entrepreneur Council.
Thanks to all our fellow bloggers participating in Blog Action Day—we’re glad to be participating!
