It’s a new year! Time for a new you! Sure, you could make the same boring old New Year’s resolutions you do every year – get in shape, lose the clutter, save more money – but let’s be honest – how long do those resolutions really last? Maybe through the beginning of February, if you’re lucky? Once those Valentine’s Day chocolates start making the rounds, it’s all over.

Luckily, mixing things up a little can sometimes amp up your efforts. So this year, why not try pairing any personal resolutions you make with…wait for it…corresponding email marketing resolutions for your company? That way, you’ll constantly be reminded of one or the other – which will hopefully boost your efforts in both areas.

1. Lose that extra weight. Is your email marketing list a little out of shape? You may need to trim the fat by culling the email addresses of people who no longer open or click through your emails. Keeping these addresses doesn’t just create annoying extra flab – it can actually be harmful to your company’s health if recipients get tired of your emails and report them as spam instead of unsubscribing.

2. Stop those bad habits. Maybe it’s your personal resolution to quit smoking or biting your nails. If you look carefully, there are bound to be some bad habits you’ve fallen into in your email marketing activities, as well. Have you stopped sending emails on a regular basis? Do you resort to a generic form letter when you do? Or have you fallen into a rut, sending the same tired old content time and time again? Make 2014 your year for a reenergized fresh start, and quit those bad habits now!

3. Eat healthier. You get out of something that you put into it. When you fuel your body with fresh, nutritious foods, you’ll have the energy you need to get things done. 4. Get more exercise. You remember your high school science classes, right? A body at rest tends to stay at rest. You’ve got to get yourself moving regularly in order to keep up that momentum. It’s just as true of exercise as it is for email marketing – if you get into the habit of sending emails regularly to maintain momentum, it’ll be a lot easier to continue than if you send them sporadically.

5. Try out a new look. January is the time for new beginnings, so why not give yourself a makeover? Whether it’s a new hairdo or a new email template design, change can be energizing and exciting, both for you and your subscribers. A dramatically different color scheme or a big change in the usual format of your emails can be just the thing to catch someone’s eye and get them to engage.

6. Learn something new. Some people resolve to learn a new language or to finally take that pottery class at the local community college. Why not add in a resolution to make an investment in your company’s email marketing efforts, as well, and attend a webinar given by a guru, or choose a mentor to follow online and learn from?

7. Get organized. Paring down clutter can allow you to focus on important things at home, and getting organized in your email marketing activities is just as beneficial. Create a strategy before you send a single email this year, to be sure that every step you take is focused on and directed towards your goals.

8. Do more socializing. It’s fine to be a homebody sometimes, but strengthening relationships with old friends, and making new ones, is a great personal resolution to make. Don’t stop there, though – you should be doing just as much socializing, if not more, through your email marketing. Be sure to include social media like and share buttons in every single email, to foster those connections, and integrate your email marketing with your social media marketing wherever possible.

9. Spend more quality time with your loved ones. We’re all so busy that it can be hard to find opportunities to spend real quality time with family members and friends – but it’s vital to the health of your relationships, and your health, as well. The same goes for your most loyal, engaged email subscribers – treat them like family, devote quality time to sending them special emails, and you’ll be solidifying the bonds between them and your company – and giving your company’s health a boost, at the same time.

10. Flex those creative muscles. You may resolve to finally get moving on that knitting project, or begin writing the great American novel – but don’t leave your creativity at home! You can harness its power in your email marketing efforts, as well, by coming up with new and creative subject lines, email templates and images, and content. Feel like sticking a video into your email one day, and writing a goofy poem the next? Why not? People appreciate creativity.

11. Volunteer in your community. Everyone understands the importance of giving back to their community, whether you’re helping organize cans at a food bank or manning a fundraiser booth for your local animal shelter. But email marketing is all about giving, too. The more helpful, valuable content you provide free of charge for your subscribers, the more likely it is that they’ll eventually become customers.

12. Whip those finances into shape. Just about everyone could stand to save a little more money and cut down on spending a little bit, too. But financial concerns loom just as large in business. Use analytics to find out what the real ROI is from your email marketing activities, so you’ll know exactly where to trim the budget and where to strategically put your dollars.

13. Go green. While it takes some effort to go green at home, email marketing is all about saving trees! If you do still send out direct mail, consider whether switching to email-only might be just as effective, and give customers the option to receive bills and other communications from you electronically instead. It’ll save money and allow you to add more subscribers to your list.

14.  Finally get around to that project. You know the one! The project that’s been hanging over your head for years…the one you know you need to get done, but just never have the motivation or time to get to… Applied to your email marketing strategy, this is just as good of a time to finally get that one task done that you’ve been putting off.
